FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – A year after registering the second highest single-season home attendance in program history, the Northern Arizona soccer team will play 10 of their 18 games during the 2013 season at Lumberjack Stadium once again providing Lumberjack soccer fans with a number of opportunities to “Pack the Jack.” The 2013 season is highlighted with five televised home games on the Fox Sports Arizona family of networks and is sure to be another quality schedule for the Lumberjacks.

“This year we will have the opportunity of having 10 home games and it’s a good balanced schedule that will test us early in the season with some non-traditional opponents,” said head coach Andre Luciano. “We have a good stretch of home games in September against opponents from good conferences and it gives us the opportunity to establish ourselves prior to conference.”

After opening the season on Aug. 23 at Long Beach State, an NCAA Tournament at-large qualifier in 2012, the Lumberjacks will open their 10-match home schedule with Lamar on Aug. 25 on the Sunday prior to the start of the university’s fall semester. A school record attendance of 2,207 packed Lumberjack Stadium to see the Lumberjacks host in-state rival Arizona State in last season’s home opener, which was also a part of Welcome Weekend.

Following their home opener, the Lumberjacks will head back to the state of California with road contests at CSU Bakersfield and UC Riverside the following weekend before returning home for five consecutive home dates. Over the course of three straight weekends from Sept. 8-22, NAU will welcome UNLV, Grand Canyon, Colorado State, UTEP and Hawaii to Flagstaff to close out the team’s nonconference preparation for what will be a challenging Big Sky schedule.

Throughout their first nine matches, the Lumberjacks will trek through relatively unfamiliar territory leading up to their Big Sky opener at Southern Utah on Sept. 28. While the Lumberjacks will face CSU Bakersfield and UNLV for the second consecutive season and UTEP for the second time in four years, they have little to no history with their six remaining nonconference foes. NAU will square off with Long Beach State, Grand Canyon and Colorado State for the first time in school history and none of the team’s current roster has ever faced UC Riverside (last meeting: 2005), Hawaii (2006) or Lamar (2007).

The conference season will see the Lumberjacks playing five of their nine Big Sky contests on the road. NAU will host two conference weekends with Idaho State, the defending Big Sky champions, and Weber State visiting on Oct. 4 and 6 and Northern Colorado and North Dakota to follow two weeks later on Oct. 18 and 20. In addition to Southern Utah, NAU will travel to Sacramento State, Portland State, Montana and Eastern Washington to round out the second half of its 2013 slate.

Northern Arizona University will continue its partnership with Fox Sports Arizona and its family of networks as NAU-TV will broadcast five of the Lumberjacks’ 10 home matches to national and regional audiences. NAU’s games versus Lamar (Aug. 25), Grand Canyon (Sept. 13), Colorado State (Sept. 15), Idaho State (Oct. 4) and Weber State (Oct. 6) are scheduled telecasts allowing fans across the nation to witness Lumberjack soccer at Lumberjack Stadium, one of the premier soccer facilities in the Western United States.

“The ability to have five home matches broadcasted to a national audience highlights the commitment and direction that our University is taking to make us a nationally recognized athletic department,” Luciano said. “There are not too many teams in non-BCS conferences that have this opportunity and we welcome the exposure for our program.”

The Lumberjacks’ fall season begins on Aug. 10 with a Blue and Gold intrasquad scrimmage at 7:30 p.m. at Lumberjack Stadium. More information regarding the scrimmage will be made available on nauathletics.com in the near future.
